An ADHD evaluation is a clinical conversation with a licensed provider who specializes in attention disorders. It is the only way to get a formal ADHD diagnosis -- and the first step toward treatment that works.

At ADHD One, evaluations are thorough, straightforward, and designed to fit your schedule. Most patients complete theirs in a single appointment.

What Happens During Your Evaluation

Your provider will walk through a structured clinical interview that covers four key areas:

Symptom assessment. Your provider reviews specific ADHD symptoms -- inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity -- using validated clinical tools including the ASRS and DSM-5 criteria. They will ask about frequency, severity, and duration.

Functional impact. ADHD is not just about having symptoms. It is about those symptoms interfering with real life. Your provider will ask how your symptoms affect work, relationships, daily responsibilities, and overall wellbeing.

History review. ADHD symptoms must have been present before age 12. Your provider will explore your childhood experiences, academic history, and any previous mental health treatment to build a complete picture.

Differential diagnosis. Anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and thyroid conditions can all mimic ADHD. Your provider will carefully distinguish ADHD from other conditions -- or identify them as co-occurring issues that need treatment alongside ADHD.

What You Do NOT Need

No referral. You do not need a referral from your primary care doctor. You can schedule directly.

No neuropsych testing. Expensive multi-hour testing is not required for most ADHD diagnoses. A clinical evaluation with a qualified provider is sufficient in the vast majority of cases.

No prior records. While previous records can be helpful, they are not required. Your provider can conduct a thorough evaluation based on your self-report and clinical interview alone.

How Long Does It Take?

The evaluation itself takes 45 to 60 minutes. If your provider confirms ADHD and determines medication is appropriate, treatment can begin during that same appointment.

At most clinics, the wait to get an evaluation appointment is 2 to 4 months. At ADHD One, same-week appointments are typically available.

How Much Does It Cost?

With insurance: Most evaluations are covered as a standard mental health benefit. You will pay your normal copay -- usually 0 to 5.

Without insurance: A clinical evaluation typically costs 00 to 00. For a detailed breakdown, see our evaluation cost guide.

After Your Evaluation

If your provider confirms ADHD, the next step is a personalized treatment plan. This may include medication, behavioral strategies, or both. Many patients leave their first appointment with a prescription and a follow-up scheduled.

If ADHD is not confirmed, your provider will discuss what they did find and recommend appropriate next steps. Either way, you leave with answers.

ADHD Evaluation FAQs

Can I get evaluated through a video appointment?

Yes. ADHD check-ups can be conducted through secure video appointments following current DEA and state guidelines. This is how most ADHD One check-ups work -- you connect from home and complete everything in one visit.

What should I bring to my check-up?

Your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any previous records related to ADHD or mental health. If you have taken our free screening, have those results ready. It also helps to write down specific examples of how symptoms affect your daily life.

Can I get medication at my first visit?

If your provider confirms ADHD and determines medication is right, yes. Many patients leave their first appointment with a prescription sent to their pharmacy. Learn about your medication options.

What ages do you evaluate?

ADHD One evaluates patients ages 6 and up. Children, adolescents, and adults all benefit from thorough, provider-led check-ups.
